HISTORY OF FESTAC DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS CHURCH

Foursquare Festac District Headquarters Church which now wears a triple crown of a local Church, Zonal Headquarter Church and District Headquarter Church, had a humble beginning as a Life Centre (now called House Fellowship). New inhabitants of the Festival town who moved in after the curtain was drawn on celebrations of 2nd World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC ’77) had among them Foursquare members from Yaba, Surulere, and Ikeja Churches. They all Fellowshiped together in a Life Centre started at the residence of and coordinated by Sister Nike Olalekan (later Rev Mrs Oladosu) in July 1977. It later metamorphosed into a preaching point under the Church pioneering work of Yaba Church under the able leadership of Rev Dr. James Boyejo (now late) who sent Pastor and Mrs. Oshungbohun (now Rev. & Rev Mrs Oluwagbohun) to pioneer the work. It took off in the premises of 3rd Avenue primary School in March, 1978. The young Church was chartered in 1980 while still worshipping in the primary School. The Church was later sent packing from the School premises alongside other tenants. This led them to hold meetings in the open space under canopies beside a brother’s house.
It was from this tortuous wilderness experience that the Church earned it’s indecorous appellation of a “mobile church”. They later found an accommodation in a Festac ’77 purpose built Federal Housing Authority (FHA) restaurant at 311 Road. Meanwhile all efforts to get allocation of land from FHA were in vain. In 1984, being forced out of the restaurant again, the Church moved to a continuing education Centre by 1st Avenue, near the 1st and 2nd Avenue Junction.
By 1985, the Church purchased a 5 & 1/2 plots of a marshy land near Domorose Hotel, Casco Street in Agboju across Badagry Expressway.
The Church was carved out from Surulere Zone to become Festac Zone in 1987.
As the Church planned to move back to Festac from Agboju under Rev Oluwagbohun, a plebiscite was conducted to decide on those who wanted to remain at Agboju and those who desired to move to the three newly created tent Churches in Festac Town. The tent Churches were located in the houses of late Sis Coker at 5th Avenue, Papa Campbell at 7th Avenue and Elder Okunfolami.
ALLOCATION OF LAND/BUILDING
To the glory of God, by 1988 Festac District Headquarter Church was allocated a land at Festac Phase 2. The development of the land commenced under Rev Oluwagbohun and in 1996 continued under Rev Wilson Adebogun Badejo who became the District Overseer when there was a swap of Festac and Agege District Overseer. Rev Richard Olajide Oloidi later took over as District Overseer in 1999 after Rev Badejo was elected the General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria. God used Rev Oloidi to continue and eventually perfected the Building of the District Headquarter Church on 42/421 Road, Cavera Estate, Festac Phase 2. The Church building was completed and dedicated on August 17,2002.
By 1989 when she received a marching order from the Continuing Education Centre, because the land space was sold by FHA, the Church had to hurriedly develop the land at Agboju which housed the worshippers and earned the place Festac Annex. All these happened under the pastoral leadership of Rev Samuel Oluwagbohun assisted by Pastor Ezekiel O Akinyele (now of blessed memory) .
Despite these trademarks of unpleasant accommodation experiences, the Church continued to grow, though painfully losing members at every turn and twist. She also gave birth to many daughter Churches under this experience, like Sabo Oni a, Ijegun Egba, Ilemba Awori, Ishashi, etc, which are also mothers of Churches today. Sabo Oni had since grown to become a District, while Ishashi is a Zonal Headquarter. The pioneering work spread to Badagry axis.
In 1994, the Church became Festac District Headquarters Church under Rev Oluwagbohun. We became a District in 1996 at the Idimu National Convention. Following the chartering of Agboju Church in 2001, it also became a zonal headquarter.
To the glory of God, the Festac Church was built and grown through the combined efforts of all brethren, workers, leaders, pastors and District Overseers everyone contributing their historic quota through excellent commitment and dedication.
